*Spoiler warning if you have not already please watch avatar if you don't want it spoiled*
The world of Avatar is so thoroughly thought out and with talks of my avatar content coming out I have rewatched the show again, and the spin off show Avatar: Legend of Korra, Wow the world building in this show is absolutely incredible. The thought out characters and the world and its culture is mind blowing.
The show first aired in 2005 and the final episode was released in 2011. There are 3 seasons in this show which are called ‘Books’ . The comic book structure was something not often seen in animation yet in western media.
Just to start this off I am going to give a quick sum up of the main characters and the 3 books
Aang - a fun loving 12 year old boy (technically 112 but that's a lot to get into) who is the current reincarnation of the Avatar spirit.
Katara - a young water bender from the southern water tribe who is the last of the benders believed to be alive in the southern water tribe.
Soka - One of the only non-benders in the avatar group Soka is Katara’s older brother and is a strong southern water tribe warrior with a heart of gold.
Toph - Introduced in book 2, Toph Beifong is a blind earth bender who uses her earth bending abilities to see and honestly being blind makes her a better bender than other earth benders from her village.
Zuko - Eldest son of the fire lord who spends 2 of the 3 books hunting down the avatar only to join their side in the final book to teach Aang fire-bending. He is hot headed (hehe get it ‘hot)
Azula - Eldest daughter of the fire lord and probably one of the most amazing villains in a children's tv show, they don't try to make her good she is just doing what she does.
Uncle Iroh - Uncle to Azula and Zuko and older brother of the fire lord whose position as fire lord was stolen from him by his younger brother. Iroh is a fan favourite of so many because he is a lovely, happy, tea loving and wisdom searching old man. Much love fo Iroh
There are many more characters in the series but I would be here for hours if I wrote about all of them.
Now on to the books!
Book 1: Water
The first season of a show is often the strangest one to follow with plot because when you start a show you are unaware if the show will get more seasons. The first episode shows brother and sister Katara and Sokka as they find a young boy frozen in an iceberg. This season shows Aang as he learns to master the element of water and throughout this time he starts to figure out what has happened in the past 100 years since his disappearance. However the gang is being chased by the disgraced fire prince Zuko who is trying to capture the avatar to restore his honour. The Aim for this season is to get to the north pole to learn from a water bending master.
Book 2: Earth
After the fight at the north pole the gang leaves the north pole and Aang continues to learn water bending from Katara as she has been named a water bending master. The aim for this season is to learn,,, you guessed it earth. Aang now has 2 of the 4 elements mastered but is in a desperate need of an earth bending master so they now travel around the earth kingdom searching for a master. This is where they meet Toph, more on her later. There is then a huge siege at the earth kingdom capital Ba sing se and the fire nation takes over the earth kingdom. Aang is fatally shot with lightning by Zuko’s sister Azula, all hope is lost and the world thinks that the avatar is dead.
Book 3: Fire
I wonder what this book is going to be about…?
After the disgraceful loss at Ba sing se the world thinks that Aang is dead so the gang joined by some water tribe soldiers and earth kingdom freedom fighters are travelling through the dangerous fire nation waters undercover as fire nation army. The disgraced crown prince Zuko has been honoured by his father and brought back into the fire nation under the idea that he killed the avatar but prince Zuko does not think the Avatar is dead. The day of black sun the armies of the earth kingdom and water tribe ascend on the fire nation capital and attempt to overthrow the tyrannical fire lord, they were very unsuccessful and all except the young kids were captured and taken to fire nation jails. On the day of black sun Zuko confronts his father for being honestly a horrible person. He legit gave his son a burn across his face just for saying maybe you shouldn’t sacrifice your soldiers if you know they will die. Zuko escapes the fire nation and looks for the avatar to teach him fire bending. Zuko and Aang learn an old form of fire bending from the original fire benders, the sun warriors. This form of fire bending is not built on emotions and can be controlled better.
Sozin's comet
I thought the finale needed to be its own paragraph because it is like :0 how can i sum this up in only one sentence…
The final battle is one of the craziest animated fight scenes I have ever watched. Not only Aang and the fire lords fight but Katara and Azula. It's just :0 I cannot describe please watch it if you haven’t and if you haven’t and you are reading this,,, what are you doing there are spoilers!! Go watch avatar!!
In the end Azula and the fire lord are captured and Zuko becomes the new fire lord and they try to bring the world into a new era of peace.
The one thing I really would like to highlight in this blog is that the creators of Avatar really put a lot of effort into creating a world that people love. There is clearly os muhc love and time put into the creation of the avatar universe. The culture, the characters and the ecosystem all work so well together.
I love this show so much and I was trying my hardest to not spoil the whole show but honestly please just watch it. It is so good. That is all
Thank you for reading
