Under Appreciated Gem?

So I've just finished the Star Wars show "Star Wars: Rebels" as it was brought to my attention by a dear friend. I had known about Rebels for years now and seen wee snippets of what happens in the show, but it always came off as quite childish compared too the glory which came before it, The Clone Wars

Spoiler warning ahead for those who have not yet watched Rebels and not want it ruined...

So the brief premise of Rebels is that it takes place in a time after the Prequel trilogy, but before the Original trilogy. This gives us an awesome look into a time period where the Empire is fully formed and rebel legions are starting to hit heavier attacks on the Empire, which comes just before the the Luke Skywalker era when the Empire hits its lowest point.

The story follows Ezra Bridger, a common street rat from Lothal who tries to steal from the crew of the rebel ship, The Ghost. The crew of the Ghost then give Ezra the option too train with Kanan Jarrus to become a Jedi and train in the old ways after order 66 which wiped out a large number of the Jedi. This may seem like your basic star wars story these day... An individual finds a child and almost adopts them as family. I would love to say that the story of rebels is any different, but it really isn't...

Star Wars: Rebels feels rather derpy in its first season with a child like attitude and a cast which almost seemed like it didn't take itself seriously. One of my complaints about this season is the main antagonists, these antagonists were the Inquisitors, tasked to take out any remaining Jedi, and they do one he'll of a job, with minimal Jedi left in the galaxy at this point. This sounds like a good premise for villains, but it feels like the creators of the show don't take them seriously and give them dumb abilities such as helicopter lightsabers,

I just find that some of the storytelling is very childish in this first season.

With the first season out of the way, I feel like season 2 is where Rebels really started hitting its home run. This might just be my bias, but with Rebels leaning more towards The Clone Wars was a good call, when I saw Ashoka pop up I was excited, then they revealed Maul and Rex and I was absolutely extatic. This season really felt as though it was leaning into the war alot heavier kicking off with the seige of Lothal which brings Darth Vader into the mix and leaving this season to useful plot points for the future of the show 2hich seem pretty irrelevant at the time.

Season three seemed a bit lackluster in my eyes, setting up more information on Grand Admiral Thrawn and a large majority of Ezra's story line depending on his relationship with Maul. This kicks off when Maul uses Ezra to access the power of the holocrons which guides them towards an old ally and foe, Obi Wan Kenobi. A large majority of the story in this season is set too finding Obi Wan on the Planet of Tatooine, which ends in a fight between Maul and Obi Wan with Obi Wan coming out victorious. Obi Wan gave Ezra some useful advice for going on with his Jedi journey. The b plot story line related too the mandalorians with Sabine Wren claiming the Darksaber off of Maul, thus becoming the rightful ruler of Mandalore, which comes into effect later in the story.

The fourth and final season of Rebela is probably my favorite season closely followed by season two. This season brought about the closing of multiple storyline while leaving more questions left unanswered. This season kicked off with the heroes of Mandalore, a storyline based of freeing Mandalore from the Empire, this lead too the mandalorians being useful allies when fighting in the war. This season allowed old characters too come back as well, allowing them too fight for the rebellion, one of the main characters who were brought back for a good reason, was one of the antagonists from the original few seasons, this was agent kallus, who joined the rebellion with open arms and fought along with them. This also gave some more character development too all out characters with Kenan loosing his vision and Sabine making ammends with the mandalorians.

The wrap up too this season was a cinematic masterpeice. The lothwolves showed Ezra the right way too defeat the empire in the jedi temple. He jumps on thrawns ship and summons the big space whales which were seen in previous seasons, to take thrawns ship into the unknown regions, even with Ezra on board. This foiled the plans of the Empire and allowed the rest of the gang too get away alive, there is then your average "what happens after" scenes. This gave a bit more story too the characters while still setting up future storyline.

I honestly loved this show, it was goofy while still deep at the same time and kind of reminded me of what made Avatar: The Last Airbender succeed. If you are a fan of star wars but hesitant on watching this show due too the childish nature of it, I recommend just going for it as it's one hell of a time, and defiantly worth the watch.

Until next time,

Matthew
