Yesterday there were no races in the America’s Cup because there wasn’t enough wind (ought to have had the oars in my opinion) apparently. Today, though, they were unable to fall back onto that absolutely pathetic excuse, and so had to head out and do some racing.
And for the first time in this whole boring, useless, waste of space tournament, there was some action. Well, some achievement anyway – they put the highlights on the news and it still looked sodding boring to me.
Anyway, apparently Luna Rossa choked massively.
Race 7: Team Emirates of New Zealand’s boat is faster than Team Prada Pirelli’s (oh, sorry, that should be Luna Rossa), apparently. After claiming to have won a glorious victory on Saturday, they actually managed one here. After being left in Luna Rossa’s wake out of the gate, they overhauled them and sailed on to win. That it has taken seven goes for a lead to change during a race is the mark of a pretty dull sport if you ask me, but hey, nobody did.
Race 8: It was here that the shenanigans occurred. Luna Rossa once again took an early lead, before Team NZ fell of their foils (the weird ski-like things on the bottom of these so-called “boats”) and ground to a halt. All over? No. The Italians then fell of theirs two, and we managed to climb back onto ours. That made us go faster and win apparently.
The upshot of this nonsense and mediocrity? Team Emirates the New Zealanders now lead the series 5-3, with the first team to seven being the winner. With two races slated for tomorrow, it could be all over by teatime.
Oh God I hope so.
