Real Madrid. Chelsea. Manchester City. Paris Saint-Germain. These are the four teams that remain standing in the UEFA Champions League.
And I’m supporting PSG. I never thought I’d say that.
You see, a couple of weeks ago I was looking at the four of them and favouring Real Madrid. That’s not as favourites, mind you, because this blog is absolutely not a prediction in any way.
I was getting behind Real Madrid not out of any love for them, but out of disdain for the other three. Chelsea, City, and PSG all have become powerhouses on the backs of their billionaire owners – nothing else. Ergo, I was supporting Real Madrid through the process of elimination.
Since then, though, the Spanish club have taken the lead in the shameful project of trying to create a European Super League. In fact, they have not yet even given up on it, such is their arrogance – so they’re twats, and they’re out.
Then there’s Manchester City and Chelsea. They, too, were part of the Super League plot, although the fact that they were the first of the English clubs to capitulate to their fans – who made their opinions abundantly clear – does claw them back some tiny, miniscule sliver of credit in my eyes. Nowhere near enough though.
Plus, y’know, they’re English – the idea of another English team winning the Champions League and me having to then hear about it all next year is unbearable.
PSG, meanwhile, are suddenly looking like a really good option for me. Sure, they’re built solely on oil money and sport the irritating prima donna of Neymar, but they were never part of the Super League plan, which as far as I’m concerned is a gigantic check mark in their column.
So, yeah. Go oil money, go Neymar, and go PSG.
