First, a piece of public service. Only scroll this page down as far as necessary to read each bit of it. There's a GIF near the bottom that really distracts from one's attempts to read, but I liked it too much to leave it out.
I’ve never reviewed a movie before, mainly because I really have no idea what I’m doing. Also, Yammer just isn’t that sort of blog.
But such was my disappointment with the second instalment of the Kingsman franchise, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, today I will write a review. Well, kind of. This post will only talk about one part of my disappointment because that makes it shorter and easier to write. It also means I won’t have the space to get political (Yammer, again, isn’t that sort of blog).
And yes, there will be spoilers.
So, without further ado: Roxy. I have no idea why they killed her off.
She was, in the first film (Kingsman: The Secret Service, which was a much better movie), a reasonably important character. And The Golden Circle started by building her importance as she carried Eggsy (the main man) through dinner with his girlfriend’s parents, culminating in the following wholesome interaction:
Eggsy: ur da best
Roxy: best agent or best friend?
Eggsy: both
Lovely enough stuff to bring warmth even to my cold and withered heart.
And then what happened? Ah yes, I remember. Roxy (and a bunch of others for good measure) got blown to hell.
Now, I usually have no problem with knocking characters off. But this just seemed arbitrary and pointless.
Was her death to make room for Channing Tatum’s character? He spent most of the film cryogenically frozen after is unfortunate cocaine habit came to light, so I’ll plump for no on that one.
Was it because there was no role for her in the film? Well, it didn’t look like it – Eggsy and Harry could really have used some help storming the fortress at the end, for example.
Or behind door number three, was Roxy’s death to inspire extra drive in Eggsy to avenge his “best friend”? Again, I’m saying no, given that she was never mentioned again after the sixty seconds following the missile strike.
So I come back to the question; what was the point of killing her?
What a waste of a character.
