The proposed European Super League collapsed like a house of cards early this morning. It was, ironically, Chelsea and Manchester City who first wavered and withdrew. They were followed by Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool as the involvement of the Premier League’s ‘Big Six’ in the Super League scheme came to an end.
The capitulations have come in the wake of 48 hours of outrage from all areas of football, and after fan and player protests before Liverpool and Chelsea each played in that time.
It was meant to be a 20-club competition - only six clubs now remain. It's all over, and football has won.
