It’s gone. It’s done. The America’s Cup is finally complete. It has taken (at least four) months, but it’s finally done.
In the aftermath of the race, the hand-wringing has of course immediately started. Can we keep the tournament here, can we keep our sailors here? The consensus seems to be that yes, we absolutely can – if the taxpayer foots the bill. Quite why we should is utterly beyond me, given that yachting is a rich man’s sport that 99% of the country cannot participate in, but nobody of consequence is likely to ask for my opinion.
The Emirates, Prada & co. are unable to pay for their own plaything is almost as ridiculous as the idiot suggestion I just heard on the radio that a lot of kids are about to start participating in yachting (where their multi-million dollar boats were are coming from wasn’t mentioned).
For now, though, the yachting is done. Hopefully I won’t have to hear about it for another four years.
P.S. – I should probably mention that Team New Zealand won.
