After weeks of unassailable dominance my beloved Crusaders proved they are indeed mortal and for the first time in a while I had to endure the bitter taste of defeat.
Our rightful victory had been stolen and to add insult to injury I was told I even had to write a blog about it afterwards!
Some of you may think that it is fitting for me to swallow my own words but let's be real here.
Who wants to write a blog about their team losing? Who wants to write a blog giving credit to the other team? About how the Hurricanes actually played a brilliant game and it was tense and exciting right till the final whistle?
Not me. I’d rather wallow in my self pity.
As I went through the motions and picked up my shattered dreams of an undefeated season, I realised things weren’t as bad as they seemed.
The Crusaders are still top of the table.
We’re still the best team in NZ.
The Blues are the Blues.
Most importantly though and here's what made everything better for me :
We play the Chiefs this week.
That’s right, the Chiefs who after 6 weeks of Super Rugby Aotearoa have won a total of zero games. That’s right ZERO. They seem so genuinely gifted at not winning and that if they played a game against themselves both teams would probably get a draw.
It’s not rocket science to predict what’s gonna happen when the most successful Super Rugby franchise of all time plays against a dumpster from Hamilton. If it was an option on the TAB I’d be tempted to pick Crusaders by 125.
We might not get an undefeated season, we may have lost our unbeaten home record but you know we play the Chiefs this week.
It’s gonna be okay.
