Another One Bites The Dust

Boom, boom, boom, boom.

Another one bites the dust

Boom, boom, boom, boom.

Another one bites the dust And another one gone, and another one gone Another one bites the dust Hey, I'm gonna get you too Another one bites the dust

Boom, boom, boom, boom.

If you didn’t enjoy that, screw you.

Anyway; in the shape of Joe Gomez another Liverpool centreback has indeed bitten the dust – and likely for the rest of the season. Along with the big man, Virgil van Dijk, that is two of the three senior centre halves at the club down for the count.

The third is Joel Matip. He’s not actually injured at the moment, but he will be soon. His entire Liverpool career can attest to the fact that he struggles with anything more regular than monthly appearances.

The first choice backup, meanwhile, is currently injured. Fabinho, a midfielder by trade, is expected back soon though. Should Matip stay fit for that long (he won’t) they could form a good partnership.

Beyond that, we come to the kids.

The most experienced (by far) of these is Nat Phillips, a positive grandpa at 23. It’s not for no reason that he looked on his way out in the summer though – he’s not Liverpool quality. Beggars (that’s Liverpool) can’t be choosers though, and Phillips is serviceable enough for the time being. Good in the air too.

Then there is Rhys Williams, who was thrown in the deep end against Atalanta in the Champions League and did extremely well. Atalanta were awful though, so how much can be taken from that early impression remains to be seen. Still, he shows promise.

Behind door number three stands Billy Koumetio, who is even more of an unknown quantity. Not yet eighteen at time of writing, he impressed in preseason before vanishing into the abyss. The reasons for this were kept extremely vague by the gaffer, who has said only that he is now available again. We can only hope that he was not away emulating Matip (whose injury record really is horrendous by the way; it’s impossible to overstate that).

After that is only Sepp van den Berg. If it comes down to him, it’s all over. He is nowhere near Premier League standard and never will be.

I never thought I’d say this, but here goes:

Dejan Lovren, I miss you.
